Verification monitoring involves the analysis of water samples from your water system for the presence of Legionella. This is necessary to ensure that the controls that you have in place are operating effectively and to also detect the presence of Legionella before cases of Legionnaire’s disease occur. Analysis of Legionella should be performed by an accredited environmental laboratory.
The locations and frequency for monitoring should be in line with your Water Risk Management plan and be based on risk factors such as size and complexity of the plumbing system, how often the system is used, relative risk of the patient (highly immune compromised patient areas) and the performance of other controls (i.e. any water sample that returns a <0.5mg/L residual chlorine result).
